A hygge living room in sixty seconds

We've all heard of the term Hygge (if not check it out on Wiki here!) and like others I am drawn to different parts of the lifestyle!

Living in North Idaho is damp, dark and sometimes depressing. Don't get me wrong, I'd never want to live anywhere else in the world, but to be honest the dark cold winters, while fun and beautiful for the first three months, can be a bit dreary come March.

If you live with a lack of sunshine in the winter, love Scandinavian style or find yousrself California Dreaming at the tail end of winter you'll want to check out these fast hygge livingroom tips!

1. Turn on relaxing and nature themed music! Bring outside....in. I have an Amazon Echo that plays the sounds of the ocean, a thunderstorm and even a morning in the forest. It's amazing.

2. Candles and Christmas lights. There are no rules attached to using either and you can't have too many! Our local Walmart sells white Christmas lights year-round for under $4 a box and our local Dollar Tree sells the cheapest tea lights. I like lights strung around my windows and entryways.

3. A stack of relaxing books or magazines.

4. Place three or four blankets in a small basket nearby ready for use.

5. Warm beverages galore! Have a stash of teas, coffee, hot cocoa or any other warm and wintery drinks on hand.

6. Journal. Set a thankfulness journal on your coffee table, as you are reminded of the many blessings God has poured into your life, write them down! Offer this journal to your friends and family to use as well. Include a list of fun winter activities or a bucket list on the last page!

If you're interested in learning about slowing down and the whole idea of hygge, here is a shameless plug for my friend's blog The Hygge Homemaker!

  1. I LOVE these ideas, Liz! I've never thought of keeping a thankfulness journal around, but it's a great idea! 😊
