Teach your children the difference between a secret and a surprise...it might save their life.

From a very young age we've taught our children the difference between a secret and a surprise! A surprise is something everyone will find out about eventually. I ask my children to give examples! A birthday present, a Christmas present, a surprise party and even a surprise visit from a far-away friend. These are surprises and they  make people happy!
A secret usually makes someone sad. We tell our children never to keep a secret.  A secret is something hidden forever, something someone never wants to be shared. If someone tells you not to ever tell someone something, especially your parents, you tell right away. Of course this goes hand in hand with talking to your children about appropriate touching etc.
This has kept our children safe, one older child reported a knife that another child was keeping as a secret and another child reported a neighbor friend being immodest. The message here is short and sweet!

May God bless you as you try to keep your children safe!
