Ways to make your homeschool history lessons *more* exciting

History is living! History is exciting, wild, imaginative and beyond anything we could ever come up with on our own! It's also my favorite homeschool subject to teach! History shouldn't be boring, not because children need to be entertained, but because it's full of so many unbelievable stories! Here are a few ways you can beef up your history lessons!

                                                          Mt. Vesuvius

Playmobil! These guys can get pricey but you can often find them on sale and used on Craigslist. We've also been known to ask for them as Christmas gifts and have also borrowed from friends! Currently we have nomads, the wild west and ancient Egypt!

LEGOs!  Same idea as Playmobil but my older children love to use the LEGO stop and go movie maker app. The boys actually made a Lego movie of Martin Luther nailing his 95 thesis to the church door!

We've also been known to take it outside!  With a journal or an old iPhone to record information, we send the children out on history quests.

Dress up!  Make parts of a costume out of cardboard, old fabric or from the $.47 rack at your thrift store.  We have used face painting, old costumes and other strange things!!!!

Write a small play about a person you are interested in learning more about from the time period you are studying.  Make tickets and hand them out to neighbors and family members.

Live in the past for twenty-four hours.  Eat, sleep, talk and play like the people groups you are studying!  You could even turn out the lights for the day and cut the cord to your electronics.

Ok!  That's all I have for now. GO OUT AND MAKE HISTORY!
