Outdoors with kids in the PNW-Spring Valley Resivour, Moose Creek and Elk River

I really love Troy Idaho.  A big piece of my heart is there.  We have enjoyed the bike trail, cherry picking at Nelson's farm, getting coffee at The Filling Station, catching candy at the Troy Old Timers day and going fishing off of the bridge near the park.  We love the little hidden park that has a million raspberries and blackberries and we love the little grocery store down the hill.  We.Love.Troy.  One of our favorite fishing holes is Spring Valley Reservoir.  You can fish year round and they often have an ice fishing competition in February.  We've never been, I'm chicken!  There is a nice hike around the reservoir, a bunch of docks to fish off of, bird houses, a fire pit and bathrooms.  There is limited shade around the fishing area, so remember to bring a lot of water to keep cool.  This spot is free of charge and has a good amount of parking.  Folks also bring their dogs and canoes!

If you head on down the road towards Boville, you will reach Moose Creek.  It is beautiful, has over night camping spots, bathrooms, docks and stocked water to fish in.  You can catch bluegill, catfish or bass for lunch and cook it over one of their fire pits.  There is a hiking trail around the reservoir but I haven't hiked it yet!  There is no cell coverage, or at least they warn you that there may not be, and there isn't a payphone available.  Bovill is right around the corner though and there is a phone in town., along with several restaurant's and a winery I believe.  I will warn that on holiday weekends Moose Creek can get really packed.  So if you are looking for peace and quiet on a holiday weekend, you might want to look elsewhere.
Once you've filled up in Bovill you can take a right or a left.  Let's head right (west) to Elk River this time and head left (East) towards Clarkia next time!  Elk River is actually on the River.  There are a few little shops and resturants and they are famous for huckleberry hunting and huckleberry ice cream.  Folks don't drive cars but their quads.  There are docks right off the main road and picnic spots as well. As you ride into or out of town you will see the Elk River public school which was closed in 1990.  Elk River kids are bused to Bovill to attend school.  Be warned, it stays pretty cool in the fall, winter and spring...most times I guess!  The record high for January on record was a whopping 54!

I hear they have an epic 4th of July party!  Have you been?!
